Oases of the Tassili

Duration: 6 Days / 5 Nights
- 4×4 Circuit and Walks
- Transport: 4×4
A complete discovery tour between dunes and oases of the Tassili region.
Day after day, the many Saharan landscapes unfold before you: dunes, plateaus, canyons, wadis, and green islands. You’ll also pass through some of the most important Neolithic rock art sites in the region.
This well-balanced itinerary reveals the incredible diversity of landscapes and ecosystems in just a few steps.
The journey begins at the foot of the Erg Admer, one of the largest dune massifs in the Sahara. You’ll visit the famous Crying Cow engraving—an absolute gem of Neolithic rock art, known for its striking detail and emotion.
Then, you’ll enter the pre-Tassili region, where “stone forests” rise dramatically from ochre sands—like the jagged sandstone spires of Timghas (“molars” in Tuareg), the open spaces and pinnacles of Tilliline, the Tikoubaouine arch (“saber” in Tuareg), and several prehistoric settlements with ancient paintings and stone tools.
Hidden within a narrow canyon, the lush oasis of Essendilène bursts with pink oleanders.
Later, the 4x4s take you up to the Dider plateau to explore the Tin Teghert rock slab, home to over 150 carvings of antelopes, ostriches, rhinos, and more.
In the Iherir valley, a green haven surrounds the last flowing wadi in this vast region—recognized as a Wetland of International Importance by UNESCO in 2001.
You’ll also discover Idharen, a seasonal nomadic village active during the date harvest.
The trip ends beautifully with a return through the Erg Admer and the great dune of Edehi.
Note: Traveling by 4×4 allows for flexible pacing. If a particular spot fascinates you, your guide will be happy to let you spend more time enjoying it.
